The internet was built on sites recommending or referring to relevant sites by means of linking. Even some of today's top search engines use the amount and quality of links to a site as a means of deciding where in their results that site should rank. Unfortunately people created jumbled, long lists of links on their link pages and surfing the web via links became tedious and oft resulted in landing on a site you wished you hadn't.
